Thomas R. Bailey, Ph.D. President of the College

Thomas BaileyDr. Thomas R. Bailey is the 11th President of Teachers College, Columbia University and the George & Abby O’Neill Professor of Economics & Education. A 27-year faculty member, he is the founding director of the TC’s Community College Research Center and Director of the Institute on Education and the Economy. Dr. Bailey also has directed two National Centers funded by the Institute for Education Sciences: The Center for Analysis of Postsecondary Education and Employment and Center for the Analysis of Postsecondary Readiness. From 2006 to 2012, Dr. Bailey directed the IES-funded National Center for Postsecondary Research.

Dr. Bailey received his undergraduate degree in economics from Harvard University and his Ph.D. in labor economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Thomas James, Ph.D. Provost and Dean of the College

Dr. Thomas JamesDr. Thomas James became Provost, Dean, and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Teachers College on July 1, 2007, and is also on the faculty of TC’s Department of Arts and Humanities. Dr. James was formerly Dean of the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Previously, Dr. James was Vice Dean and Professor of Educational History at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Education, and prior to that, a tenured professor at Brown University. He received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and his master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University. A historian by training, he is the author of Exile Within: the Schooling of Japanese Americans 1942–45. He also has written on law and the history of education as well as educational governance and control. As a child, Dr. James attended the famous Laboratory School at the University of Chicago, founded by John Dewey.

Suzanne M. Murphy, M.A., Ed.M. Vice President for Development and External Affairs

Suzanne M. Murphy, M.A., Ed.M. Vice President for Development and External AffairsSuzanne M. Murphy became Vice President for Development and External Affairs at Teachers College in February 2008. Prior to coming to Teachers College, Ms. Murphy served as Vice President of College Resources at Sarah Lawrence College and as Vice President of External Affairs and Enrollment Services at Marymount Manhattan College. She also taught intensive summer courses in reading and writing to students in the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), created a similar program for economically disadvantaged children who did not meet HEOP poverty requirements; and coordinated Marymount’s program in alcoholism and counseling. Ms. Murphy holds a B.A. degree from Marymount Manhattan College and both Ed.M. and M.A. degrees from Teachers College.

Janice S. Robinson, Esq. Vice President for Diversity and Community Affairs

Janice S. Robinson, Esq. Vice President for Diversity and Community AffairsJanice S. Robinson serves as the Vice President for Diversity and Community Affairs, as the TC Title IX Coordinator, and also as an Associate Professor in Higher Education. She joined Teachers College in December 2000, served jointly as Executive Director for Diversity and Community, and assumed the additional responsibilities of the College’s first General Counsel through February 2009. Previously, she held a joint appointment at Rutgers University – Newark as Special Counsel to the Law School Dean and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs; and she also served as Director for the Academic Foundations Center at the Newark College of Arts and Sciences. Previously, she was Assistant Dean, Director of the Minority Student Program, and Director of Financial Aid at Rutgers Law School. She has practiced law at the Legal Aid Society – Civil Division and taught at the Dalton School. Ms. Robinson earned her J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law, her Ed. M. and M.A. from Teachers College, and her B.S. from the University of Bridgeport. She earned two post-graduate certificates from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and was awarded a fellowship at the University of London’s Institute for Advanced Legal Studies.

Harvey Spector, M.A., M.C.R.P Vice President for Finance and Administration

Harvey Spector, M.A., M.C.R.P Vice President for Finance and AdministrationHarvey Spector became the Vice President for Finance and Administration in June of 2007. He received master’s degrees in Public Administration and City and Regional Planning from Ohio State University. Spector, a native New Yorker, served as the Deputy Budget Director in New York City's Office of Management and Budget under Mayor Koch in the late 1980's and as Vice President for Finance and Operations at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Prior to his work at FIT, he was director of Management and Budget for the New York City Transit Authority and a special advisor to the New York State Financial Control Board.

Katie Conway, Ed.D.​ Secretary to the College and Chief of Staff

Dr. Katie ConwayDr. Katie Conway is ​Secretary of the College and ​Chief of Staff in the Office of the President at Teachers College, Columbia University. She is also Associate Professor​ (coterminous)​ in the program in Higher & Postsecondary Education at TC. Prior to coming to TC, Katie worked at Columbia University, most recently as the Director of Academic Affairs for the Columbia University Medical Center and, before that, in institutional research and strategic planning for the undergraduate schools. Her research considers ideas of success and satisfaction in the ​faculty career. In addition to her doctorate, she holds an MA and an EdM from TC and a BA from Columbia College, Columbia University.

Nancy Streim, Ph.D.​ Associate Vice President for School and Community Partnerships and Special Advisor to the Provost

Vice President for School and Community Partnerships and Special Advisor to the ProvostDr. Nancy Streim joined Teachers College in 2007 in the newly created position of Associate Vice President for School and Community Partnerships and Special Advisor to the Columbia University Provost. In her role as the head of the Office of School and Community Partnerships (OSCP), Dr. Streim leverages faculty and student research, teaching, and service to enrich learning and improve outcomes in New York City public schools, especially those in the local community. Major initiatives include the development of the Teachers College Community School and the Teachers College Partnership Schools network. The OSCP also provides a broad array of enrichment programs for local schools including the Reading/Math Buddies, Performing Arts Series, Harlem Schools Partnership for STEM Education, Harlem Ivy after school program, and Earth Friends.

Before coming to TC, Dr. Streim was Associate Dean for Educational Practice at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education where she and President Fuhrman developed the university-assisted school model that guides the work at TC. She holds a B.A. in Art History from Bryn Mawr College, an M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration from SUNY-Brockport and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Katie Embree, ​Ed.D. Vice Provost

Katie EmbreeKatie Embree is Vice Provost and Assistant Professor of Higher Education and Post-Secondary Education (co-terminus) at Teachers College, Columbia University. In her current position she oversees the College’s academic budget, faculty and academic affairs administrative operations, the Dean Hope Center for Educational and Psychological Services, the Office of Accreditation and Assessment and the Office of Academic Affairs Compliance. Katie also serves as chair of several College-wide committees, including the Harassment Panel. Selected prior roles at Teachers College include Associate Director of the Center for Educational Outreach and Innovation, Assistant Dean, Associate Vice Provost and Associate Provost. In prior roles, Katie oversaw the student services offices of the College and chaired the College’s Psychological Emergency Response Team and the Student Conduct Committee. She earned an MBA in Finance from Seton Hall University in 1995 and successfully escaped banking and insurance when she started at Teachers College in 1996 where she earned a doctorate in Higher and Post-Secondary Education in 2001.

Michael Feierman, General Counsel

Michael FeiermanMichael Feierman was appointed General Counsel in July 2017. He previously served as General Counsel of Barnard College, Columbia University from 1995 to 2010, and then practiced in the Higher Education Group at Bond, Schoeneck & King in New York, where he provided legal and administrative guidance to colleges, universities, private secondary schools, and other not-for-profit organizations.

Feierman earned his law degree at Fordham Law School and his undergraduate degree in social work from Adelphi University.

Columbia University Alma MaterIn 1898, Teachers College became affiliated with Columbia University as a professional school for the training of teachers while retaining its legal and financial independence. Later that year, Teachers College and Columbia University adopted an affiliation agreement.

Mary Adelaide Nutting TC was home to the first university-based instructional program for nursing educators and administrators, created by Mary Adelaide Nutting.
