New students filled the Horace Mann auditorium early on September 2 for the Orientation welcome session. President Arthur Levine was the first to greet the students, giving them an overview of the history of the College, the current student population, and the role that TC is playing now locally, nationally, and internationally in the field of education.

Dean Karen Zumwalt noted that 53 percent of the students at TC are pursuing a master's degree, 73 percent are female, 23 percent are people of color, and 12 percent are from other countries. The average age is 34.2 years old. She also advised the students that, "One factor counts in terms of what you get out of TC. That factor is you."

Associate Dean William Baldwin told students to meet with their advisors and then, "Go home!" Rather than waiting on line to register for their classes, he said that students can receive a pin number and register by touch-tone phone.

As a welcoming gesture, Associate Dean Baldwin and Susanne Nanka-Bruce, director of the Office of Student Life, gave out gifts to those who met unusual qualifications, such as the student with the longest commute or the youngest student.
