In a New York Times article, Teachers College, Columbia University President Arthur Levine commented on Education Secretary Richard W. Riley's recent speech regarding the state of education in the United States. The speech addressed the need to ensure that new teachers are well qualified. President Levine said that while upping the standards for new teachers is worthwhile; unfortunately many schools will need to fill vacant positions no matter what. He did also commend Riley's efforts, however.
