Extreme Makeover

This fall, some TC students will be living in a new dorm and everyone in the community will be using the Gottesman Libraries, which have undergone extreme makeovers, inside and out.

The New Dorm

The new brick and terra cotta dormitory is located on West 121st and 122nd streets. It includes 252 efficiency and studio apartments, as well as a large lobby, onsite laundry, a study lounge and two group/study computer rooms opening onto a landscaped courtyard.

The Gottesman Libraries

The transformation of the Milbank Memorial Library into The Gottesman Libraries will provide the community with a much-improved state-of-the-art intellectual research center.

Not only will the look of this teaching resource center change, but also the types of activities possible within its walls. The Everett Library Café browsing lounge will be located at the libraries' new entrance. The periodical room will provide online journal access, and study carrels throughout the library feature connections for plug-in laptops and wireless accessibility. The Schwarz Room and the Goodman Room will have individual electrical and data hook-ups and the latest AV technology.

Modern technology will blend seamlessly into aesthetics of the original design. The leaded-glass windows and archways will remain and new furnishings have been chosen to reflect the library's original era. The Russell Hall stairway is being given a bright coat of paint in colors similar to those used in 1905, the year it was built.
