At Education Fair, Why Many US Universities Are Making a First Trip
Mumbai, October 18: It was a day of surprising new players on the block at Tuesday’s seventh IIE (Institute of International Education) US University Fair organized by the United States Educational Foundation in India, including Ivy-leaguer Columbia University and one of the top US art and design schools.
Though students still overwhelmingly sought options in engineering and the sciences, there were a number of institutes promoting sunrise majors in education and the arts because, in the words of one representative, "these are the fastest-growing majors for Indians who come to America."
"Coming here was a big gamble for us," said Thomas P. Rock, director of Admissions for Teachers College at Columbia University, and it turned out the results for him weren't exactly what he'd expected. "I spent most of the morning telling students how to get in touch with Columbia's medical school. This was probably not the right venue," he admitted,"since Teachers College grants only advanced degrees in the areas of teaching and education."
