John Allegrante (Health and Behavior Studies), Anna Neumann (Higher and Postsecondary Education), Dolores Perin (Health and Behavior Studies), Steve Silverman (Biobehavioral Studies),Veronica Holly, a Senior Program Associate at the Institute for Urban and Minority Education (IUME).
John Allegrante (Health and Behavior Studies) received a Fulbright Senior Specialist Grant in Public/Global Health enabling him to be in residence as the Fulbright Professor in the new School of Health and Education at Reykjavik University, the first private research university in Iceland. During a month-long visit, he assisted in the development and launch of new M.Ed. and M.P.H. degree programs in health education and provided consultative assistance to the president and her development staff on a master plan for their new university campus. In addition to giving lectures to the program's inaugural class, he collaborated with Icelandic colleagues in the Center for Social Research and Analysis to launch a new collaborative research project on the relationship between health and physical status and academic achievement in Icelandic school children.
Anna Neumann (Higher and Postsecondary Education) was honored when recent TC graduates Aimee LaPointe Terosky and Riva S. Kadar created a new award, the "Anna Neumann Supporting Student Research Award." The award will be given to part-time or full-time doctoral students who study issues related to faculty careers or teaching and learning in higher and postsecondary education. They will receive funding to cover expenses related to his or her attendance of a professional conference focused on the study of higher and postsecondary education.
Dolores Perin (Health and Behavior Studies), as principal investigator, received a $100,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to improve teacher preparation for adolescent literacy instruction in secondary education through interdisciplinary learning communities with the National Academy for Excellent Teaching (NAfET), directed by Douglas Wood. Carnegie Corporation chose NAfET as one of 406 institutions to receive funds for its contributions to the culture, health, welfare and vibrancy of the city and its reflection of a wide range of ethnic and classical traditions. The project will align curriculum between reading comprehension and writing skills, and social studies and science education. Other faculty on the grant include professors Ann Rivet, Anand Marri, Margaret Crocco and Angela Calabrese-Barton.
Steve Silverman (Biobehavioral Studies) was chosen president-elect of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education (AAKPE). The AAKPE membership is made-up of senior scholars who are elected as fellows in the organization. Silverman will take over the position at the 75th anniversary meeting in Dallas at the end of September.
Veronica Holly, a Senior Program Associate at the Institute for Urban and Minority Education (IUME), received a Robert Bowne Foundation 2005-2006 Research Fellowship to initiate and conduct her own research project. Her research will cover school governance, community partnerships and student outcomes. She is a program developer for IUME's Task Force on Supplementary Education, conducting parent involvement and education workshops, and is Site Coordinator for the Harlem After 3 - After School program at C.S. 200 in Manhattan. Holly was also recently invited to serve on the New York State's Afterschool Network Researchers Group, a public-private partnership of statewide, regional and local groups dedicated to promoting young people's safety, learning and healthy development outside the traditional classroom.
