The City's Latest Hirings
Dr. Susan H. Fuhrman will be returning to her alma mater, Columbia University's Teachers College to become its first woman president. She will be leaving her post as the dean of the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education, where she has been for the last 11 years. The trustees of Teachers College noted that she was an ideal pick because of her background in bettering public education.
During her tenure in Pennsylvania, the graduate school helped to create the Penn Alexander School, a pre-K-8 public school with about 500 students, where the first graduating eighth grade class ranked in the top 20 percent in math scores in the state compared to schools with similar demographics. The school also set up critical partnerships with three low-performing schools in its West Philadelphia backyard, where it has been able to boost student achievement. She will replace current Teachers College President Arthur Levine on August 1st.
