The Portland Press Herald reports on the release of a collection of narratives written by teenagers incarcerated at the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, Maine entitled, Smoke Signals: Oral Histories From Long Creek

This book was piloted by Long Creek volunteer Bill Lundgrun, with consultation from the Teachers College Student Press Initiative, which has created similar collections written by teenagers incarcerated at the Riker's Island Correctional facility and students attending New York City public schools.

At Long Creek, six Teachers College instructors and a member of the Columbia University Oral History Association helped interview and record the teenagers' stories.  The teenage writers then spent six months revising their narratives, and quickly became captivated with the project.  The book will be distributed to high schools across the state, and there is talk of a book tour.

This story was also reported in The Portland Forecaster, The Portland Phoenix, The Maine Sunday Telegram, and in an interview on Fox 23 in Maine.  April 7, 2007.
