Last fall, School Supt. Irene Cornish appointed a committee to revamp the reading program so it has continuity throughout the system and from grade to grade.

The school system has the most experience with the Readers' Workshop curriculum, developed at Columbia University Teachers College's Reading and Writing Project. Its companion curriculum, the Writers' Workshop, is used throughout the system's elementary schools.

Christine Holley, a reading consultant from Columbia, teaches teachers. She met with first-grade teachers, special education teachers and reading specialists at Stratford Academy Honeyspot House, where they went over lessons together and discussed teaching methods.

This summer, Stratford educators will use a grant to support a new summer school reading and math program for children in grades one to three. Cornish said the classes will meet at Center School behind the Board of Education administration center.
