Fifth-Graders Read Own Works to Preschoolers
Some kids at Pulaski Street Elementary School are writing their own books, and then reading them to younger kids.
Students in teachers Stacy Hubbard and Kelli McCabe's fifth-grade class took their act on the road last Wednesday, reading their books to children at Riverhead Country Day School.
The project is part of the district's readers and writer's workshop program, created here by Columbia University's Teachers College.
Ms. Hubbard said the students spend an hour every day in the reader's workshop and an hour a day in writer's workshop. The kids said they felt writing their own books helped give them a greater appreciation for reading.
