The two received their awards last month at ASHA’s annual convention in New Orleans. The award is given to ASHA members who have made significant contributions toward advancing multiculturalism in the speech, language and hearing professions and in the association.

Saxman, professor and coordinator of the speech and language pathology program and chair of the Department of Biobehavioral Sciences, received the award for having the vision for and developing one of the foremost speech language pathology programs in the country at Teachers College, with an emphasis on providing its graduates with the knowledge and skills to work with bilingual, minority, and low income populations.

Crowley, a lecturer in the speech and language pathology program, won because she developed and coordinates the bilingual/multicultural program focus in TC’s speech pathology program. Crowley has developed international programs for TC students in Ghana and Bolivia, to further prepare speech and pathology program graduates to provide quality services to an increasingly diverse U.S. population.
