TC Alumna to Serve on New York State Commission
Jill Iscol, who serves on the President's Advisory Council at the College, has been appointed by Governor David Paterson to the New York State Commission on National and Community Service.
Patterson appointed Iscol, who is a member of the President’s Advisory Council at TC, along with three others on July 3. Iscol received a master’s degree in curriculum and teaching from TC in 1968 and Ed.D. in 1977.
A former educator, Iscol began her career in the classroom as a first-grade teacher at P.S. 145, and also taught at TC’s own Agnes Russell School (now Horace Mann Hall). While a doctoral student, she served as Co-Director of the Preservice Program in the Childhood Education Program. After she completed her Ed.D., Iscol wrote educational materials, taught at TC, and was a faculty member at the Bank Street College of Education. She later also earned a master’s degree in sociology at Yale University.
Iscol currently manages her family’s foundation, the IF Hummingbird Foundation, which supports domestic and global efforts to strengthen democracy and reduce the social justice, economic and educational inequities that threaten it.
In 1999, Iscol and her husband, Ken, launched the Jill and Ken Iscol Lecture Series at TC. The inaugural speaker was then-First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. In 2007, the College held its first annual Iscol Symposium, co-sponsored by the Office of Policy and Research and the Program in Politics and Education, that focused on education and the presidential election.
Iscol currently serves on the board of a number of organizations, including the Bank Street College of Education, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, and City Year New York.
