Students Awarded Diversity Grants

The Committee for Community and Diversity at Teachers College has awarded $3,000 grant awards to two doctoral students as part of the President's Grant for Student Research in Diversity.
Receiving the grants are: Annie Smiley, a student in the International Educational Development Program, and Grace Clarke Hillyer, a student in the Health Education Program. In addition to Smiley and Hillyer, Hakim Williams, a doctoral student in the International Educational Development Program, has received a $1,000 honorable mention award.
Smiley will use the funding to support her dissertation research on scholarships for orphans and vulnerable children in Lesotho. Hillyer’s research focuses on the need to educate uninsured Hispanic women in New York City regarding colorectal cancer screening. Williams is examining the causes of youth violence at a school in Trinidad and Tobago.

The grant initiative is designed to provide support for outstanding student research projects that focus on diversity in research, teaching, learning, or community building.
