TC's Brooks-Gunn Elected to Institute of Medicine
Jeanne Brooks-Gunn, TC's Virginia and Leonard Marx Professor of Child Development and Education, has been elected into membership at the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies. Brooks-Gunn, who is also Co-Director of the National Center for Children and Families, based at TC, and Professor of Pediatrics at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, was one of 65 new members and five new foreign associates elected to IOM membership.
Election to the IOM is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.
"It is a great pleasure to welcome these distinguished and accomplished individuals to the Institute of Medicine," said IOM President Harvey V. Fineberg. "Each of these new members stands out as a professional whose research, knowledge, and skills have significantly advanced health and medicine and who has served as a model for others. The Institute of Medicine is greatly enriched by the addition of our newly elected colleagues."
The IOM is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing unbiased, evidence based information and advice to the nation on matters of biomedical science, medicine and health. IOM recommendations inform policy makers, professionals and the public at large to impact practice and policy and improve the lives of people around the world. Members are elected by the incumbent membership on the basis of professional achievement and an ongoing interest and involvement in public health issues.
