A Conversation about Japan and Disaster Preparedness

Tom Chandler, a graduate of TC's Social Studies and Education Program and now an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the College, is a research associate at the National Center for Disaster Preparedness (NCDP) at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health. Chandler offers insights about events unfolding in Japan following the recent earthquake and tsunami and discusses the state of readiness in the United States. John Merrow began his career as an education reporter with National Public Radio in 1974 with the weekly series, "Options in Education," for which he received the George Polk Award in 1982. He is currently President of Learning Matters and scholar in residence at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching at Stanford. Since 1984 he has worked in public television as Education Correspondent for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and as host of his own series of documentaries, The Merrow Report.

Teachers College extends its deepest sympathy and concern to the people of Japan and other Pacific Rim nations following the recent earthquake and tsunami. We have been informed that our colleagues in TC's TESOL Japan program safely exited their building. Learn to Live Well: Bringing Education to the Table
Mark your calendar for April 16, 2011, for Academic Festival, our annual homecoming, a true celebration of the rich intellectual traditions, past and present, which make TC the nation's leading school of education. The day features a star-studded line-up of faculty and alumni speakers from all disciplines during concurrent break-out sessions, as well as a Keynote Address by Dr. Ian K. Smith -- all with an eye towards wellness.

Another highlight of the Academic Festival 2011 program is the Phyllis L. Kossoff Lecture on Education & Policy, which will feature NYC Public Schools Chancellor Cathleen P. Black who will share her vision for K-12 education in New York City in her talk: "A Brighter Future for Tomorrow's Leaders." The Kossoff Lecture will take place at 9:30 a.m. in the Joyce Berger Cowin Auditorium and is open to all who RSVP.

Our expert panelists and speakers will discuss community and school nutrition, microaggressions, the arts, sexual health, and so much more.

Please join us for the 2011 Tisch Lecture featuring Dr. Priscilla Wohlstetter, Diane and MacDonald Becket Professor in Education Policy at University of Southern California & Distinguished Tisch Lecturer and Visiting Professor at Teachers College, for " A Welcome Earthquake: Shifting Responsibilities for Public Education." Dr. Priscilla "Penny" Wohlstetter's research interests include accountability in education, the policies and politics of education reform, and organizational innovations in education. She has written extensively on charter schools and strategic alliances in education. Her work in the area of accountability includes an annual report (now in its sixth year) on the academic and financial performance of charter schools in California, and online stakeholder satisfaction surveys for parents, students and staff in K-12 public schools.

Maya Soetoro-Ng was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, and is a writer and educator with a PhD in international comparative education. She says Ladder to the Moon was inspired by her young daughter Suhaila's questions about her grandmother Ann Dunham. Ann Dunham is mother to Maya as well as our forty-fourth president, Barack Obama.

The Conflict and Complexity course develops the relevance of dynamical systems theory for understanding protracted and seemingly intractable conflict at different levels of social reality (interpersonal, inter-group, international). The course outlines the conditions under which such conflict can be transformed and thus may point the way to realizable avenues of conflict resolution.

The Bilingual Extension Institute bridges the gap between research-based theoretical knowledge and everyday practice. This emphasis on training for practical application is reflected in everything from the use of practicing clinicians on the faculty to the project-based course content.
