A Bronze Medal for TC's Maya Lawrence and the U.S. Women's Epee Team

The number 4 seed U.S. women top Russia in a cliffhanger.

The U.S. women's epee team is taking home a bronze medal after beating the Russian squad on August 4th. The United States team of TC alumna Maya Lawrence (MA '10) and the sisters Courtney and Kelley Hurley edged Russia 31-30 in extra time to take bronze for its first fencing medal of these Olympics.The U.S. women previously beat number 5 Italy in a quarterfinal match in which Lawrence went a combined 15-11 in her three bouts.

China took gold in the women's epee team event, and South Korea won silver.

"No one even expected us to make it to the to p four, and to get the bronze is so amazing," said Lawrence. On July 30th, Lawrence made it to the round of 16 in the women's individual epee competition, losing to the seventh-ranked fencer in the world, Italy’s Rossella Fiamingo, 15-7. Lawrence – ranked 29th – had advanced earlier in the day by taking seven of the final nine points in her 15-12 upset of ninth-ranked Mara Navarria of Italy..
