Mildred Garcia (EdD '87), the first Latina president in the CSU system, has been appointed President of California State University, Fullerton, effective June 1. She also sits on President Obama's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence of Hispanic Americans where she advises the president and the education secretary on matters pertaining to the educational attainment of Hispanic students. They will reach out to each student you provide information for and will be sure that the student receives important information about the application and admission process at TC. A Workshop with Grant Wiggins
In this thought-provoking and practical workshop, Grant Wiggins will provide a conceptual framework for understanding what feedback is and isn't, and numerous practical tips on how to seek, receive, use, and give feedback to others. This workshop will build on the participants' working knowledge of differentiated curriculum by focusing the lens on the essential component of formative assessment. TC Love Stories

I was in the doctoral program in social psychology at TC.  My future wife, Evelyn Fleischman ('69), was studying for her Professional Diploma in Teaching English as a Second Language. She was also employed as a secretary in the social psych department as a way to gain tuition credits. That's how we met. I actually proposed in the social department, and we were married April 1969 in Grace Dodge Hall by Bruce Goldman, the Columbia University rabbi. Our best man was Roland Moses (EdD '69), a doctoral candidate in the counseling program. In 2003 our younger son, Neil, received his MA in Organizational Psychology from TC.

In September 1950, Richard Bridgewater (MA '51) and Lucille Leal (MA '51) were enrolled in the same class. For an "ice-breaker" activity, those students from west of the Mississippi were asked to meet at a specific tree in the yard. Only three people met there, Lucille Leal, Janie Obregon ('69) and Richard Bridgewater. Lucille and Richard began dating and married in August of 1951 (after completion of the SPA program at TC). They moved to Phoenix and taught for 30 years in the Phoenix Union High School District. Now retired, the couple have two children and are strong supporters of TC.

Academic Festival 2012 Update: Fun for All Ages!
Academic Festival, our signature homecoming event, is a day-long celebration of the rich intellectual traditions, past and present, that make TC the nation's leading school of education. Breakout sessions featuring TC faculty and alumni representative of all TC departments will offer interactive opportunities to explore and discuss the intersection of technology and humanity.

In addition to the breakout sessions geared specifically to alumni, the day includes programming for all ages. We encourage you to bring your kids to one of the following sessions: WeBop!; Eating for Energy featuring a cooking demo; or our session featuring College Admissions reps and their advice on applying to college in a digital age. WeBop is an early-childhood (ages 8 mo. to 5 years) jazz education program in which children and their parents/caregivers learn about jazz's improvisation, creative process, instruments, styles and great performers. The classes provide a creative outlet for parents and children to explore jazz as a tool to educate and express themselves together. The Eating for Energy cooking demo is for kids ages 6 and up and adults. The Nutrition program’s Earth Friends center teaches nutrition and food sustainability through student and parent workshops, school fieldtrips, and teacher Professional Development. Pam Koch (EdD '00) will lead a cooking demonstration teaching the lessons of choice, control and positive changes to build healthy eating habits for life. Tom Rock (EdD '02) Executive Director of Enrollment Services will lead a panel of admissions professionals to help prepare your college-bound students for finding the right college and getting in to their school of choice in this digital age.

February 8 - Inaugural Celebration of TC's Department of Education Policy and Social Analysis
The past 10 years have seen remarkable ferment in the area of educational reform, with repercussions for states, local public school districts,and private schools. But where are we heading next? On the one hand, things currently seem to be in a holding pattern, with Congress unable to see its way through either to the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act or uncertainties surrounding the next presidential election. At the same time, this holding pattern coexists with a sense of volatility. The loose bipartisan coalition that has steered national education policy along a fairly steady course through Republican and Democratic administrations alike may be unraveling. Our panelists, Christopher T. Cross, Jack Jennings and Wendy D. Puriefoy, will look beyond the 2012 election and explore the prospects of national education reform under various scenarios. Jeff Henig, EPSA Department Chair and Professor of Political Science and Education, will moderate the discussion.

Health, Behavior, and Society Colloquium Series seeks to bring together faculty and students from across Teachers College and other units of Columbia University whose research interests include the biological, behavioral, and social basis of healthy human development and health-related educational, behavioral, and social intervention. Richard Sloan, Ph.D., is the Nathaniel Wharton Professor of Behavioral Medicine at Columbia University and Chief of the Division of Behavioral Medicine at New York State Psychiatric Institute and will delve into the question: Is Religion Good for Your Health?

The Winter Roundtable is the longest running continuing professional education program in the United States devoted solely to cultural issues in psychology and education. The Winter Roundtable will continue its tradition of bringing together scholars, practitioners, researchers, social change agents and students interested in the intersections between race, ethnicity, social class, gender, sexual orientation, and religious affiliation in psychology and education. This year's theme, "Beyond Borders: Transforming Lives Through Traditions and Innovations", underscores the Roundtable's commitment to recognizing the multiple and complex effects of culture and social location in psychological and educational matters.

March 23 - Annual Special Education Conference: When Worlds Collide 2012
The annual Conference sponsored by the Center for Opportunities and Outcomes for People with Disabilities of the Health and Behavior Studies Department at Teachers College will be held on Friday, March 23, 2012 from 9:30-3:30 in the Cowin Center. This year’s theme continues to focus on: When Worlds Collide: Ongoing Challenges of Special Education in 2012. It fosters dialogue between professionals and students on contemporary issues in special education. The Conference also features the Leonard and Frances Blackman Lecture and this year’s speaker is Dr. Catherine Lord. She is a clinical psychologist and a leading expert on autism. She is best known for developing diagnostic standards for autism and new ways of teaching social and language skills. She is the newly appointed Director of the Institute for Brain Development which will be located on the Westchester campus of New York--Presbyterian Hospital and will be staffed by faculty physicians from both Columbia and Cornell. There is no charge to attend any of the Conference events, but *registration is required*.
