Dr. Ruth Goes All the Way

The Art of Affirmation

Recently, the Music and Music Education program checked in with alumni Haakon (EdD '96) and Martha (EdD '87) Smith. The Smiths are directors of the non-profitorganization International Voice of Justice, whose mission is Holocaust education through music and the arts in Europe. Additionally, they are the founders of the Oslo Music Academy in Norway. "We are very grateful for the excellent education we received at TC. It has been a basis for the work we have been doing in Europe, both as educators and as performers. It is a great privilege to carry TC's name with us wherever we are in the world," Martha offers. Heard it Through the Grapevine

Ellie Krieger (MS '95) celebrates grapes from California. It's a natural partnership between Krieger and the California Table Grape Commission who teamed up to talk about grapes from California as "The Original Super Snack." A decade's worth of research suggests that grapes may offer numerous health benefits. Grapes of every color contain a variety of antioxidants and other polyphenols, natural components in grapes that may contribute to a healthy heart. The strong health story of grapes, combined with their portability and versatility, make grapes a smart choice for healthy snacking. Read the full story and watch video of Krieger here.

Completing your Qualitative Dissertation: A Roadmap from beginning to End by Linda D. Bloomberg (EdD '06) and Marie Volpe (EdD '92). Bloomberg is adjunct faculty at TC serving as dissertation advisor. Volpe is adjunct assistant professor of adult and organizational learning at TC, teaching dissertation seminars and serving as advisor to doctoral candidates.

We invite you to nominate TC graduates who have distinguished themselves in their fields and have earned high respect among their colleagues and the general community, and whose impact is felt on a national or international level. Recent graduates who have graduated within the past 10 years, have earned distinction in their field, and who demonstrate further future potential will be honored with the Early Career Award. July 9-13 - The School Law Institute 2012
Limited spots remain for this year's School Law Institute! Register today to join national leaders in education law to discuss critical issues of law, policy, and practice. Some topics to be covered include charter schools, tort liability, harassment and cyberbullying, child abuse, serving English language learners and students with disabilities, and free-speech rights of students and teachers. Some of our presenters include John King Jr. (New York State Commissioner of Education), Gary Orfield and Patricia Gandara (Co-Directors of the UCLA Civil Rights Project/Proyecto Derechos Civiles), Rhoda Schneider (General Counsel for the Massachusetts Department of Education), and Jay P. Heubert (Teachers College Professor of Law and Education).

July 17 - Learning Analytics with IBM
IBM is a leader in metrics and uses learning analytics to gauge learning effectiveness, drive learning recommendations, and aid in decision making. Join TC alumnus (and adjunct faculty member) Nabeel Ahmad (EdD '09) and current student Michael Ticknor as they demonstrate IBM's learning analytics system. Learn how they collect various metrics to help analyze, measure, and report data about improving learning and the context it takes place in. You will leave with the knowledge to implement learning analytics in your environment. Tickets are $10 each.

September 28-29 - Language and Social Interaction Working Group
Sponsored by the TESOL and Applied Linguistics Programs at Teachers College, Columbia University, LANSI brings together like-minded colleagues in the larger metropolitan area of New York who work with audio/video-recorded data from naturally occurring interaction. Through their regularly held data sessions, LANSI offers a forum in which participants continue to build their analytical repertoire via mutual engagement over time. In so doing, they also experiment with an apprenticeship model where graduate students work alongside practicing analysts making observations and providing accounts for those observations "empirically and precisely".
