TC Alumnus Daniel S. Hendrickson Named President of Creighton University

The Rev. Daniel Hendrickson, S.J., (PhD 2012) has been named president of Creighton University, a Catholic, Jesuit institution in Omaha, Nebraska. Hendrickson, a scholar of Jesuit education who holds a doctorate in the Philosophy of Education from Teachers College, will assume the presidency on July 1, 2015.

Hendrickson’s dissertation, “The Jesuit Imaginary: Higher Education in a Secular Age,” focuses on the work of Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor and the Renaissance humanist elements of education in the Jesuit tradition. His advisor and dissertation sponsor was Megan Laverty, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Education at TC.

Hendrickson holds a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and theology from Marquette University, a master of arts in philosophical resources from Fordham University, and a master of divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University.

Scott Heider, a member of the search committee and chair of the Heider College of Business Board at Creighton, said, “Fr. Hendrickson brings a keen understanding of the value of a Jesuit education. His global teaching experience and his scholarly agenda, focused on Jesuit teaching, makes him particularly well-prepared to deepen Creighton’s connection to its mission.”

For the last several years, Hendrickson has served as Executive Vice President and Associate Provost of Academic Initiatives at Marquette, where he also taught Philosophy of Education courses in the College of Education and the Department of Philosophy, co-directed the Marquette University Burke Scholars program, and served as the Title IX Coordinator for the University.

Hendrickson, a native Nebraskan, is returning to Creighton, where he began his Jesuit education, taught philosophy, and was ordained into the priesthood in 2006.
