J-1 Research Scholar/Professor

J-1 Exchange Visitor Categories 

The J-1 Exchange Visitor Program is administered by the U.S. Department of State (DoS) for the purpose of promoting international educational exchange of ideas and collaborative teaching and research efforts.  

A Form DS-2019 is necessary to apply for a J-1 exchange visitor visa and to enter the U.S. as a J-1 Research Scholar or Professor in order to conduct research, observe, or consult in connection with a research project at Teachers College.  

The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) is responsible for the issuance of DS-2019s on behalf of Teachers College.

The Exchange Visitor Program includes several different categories of Exchange Visitors. 

In addition to enrolling international students in the J-1 Student category, Teachers College is also authorized to use the following categories for “scholars”: 



  • Program Duration: Three (3) weeks to five (5) years (continuous time)  
  • Primary Activity: Teaching or collaborative research.  Details are available on the U.S. DoS website for Professors and for Research Scholars.  
  • This category is subject to the 12- and 24-Month Bars on Repeat Participation.
  • Program Duration: One (1) day and up to six (6) months  
  • Primary Activity: Teaching or collaborative research.  Details are available on the U.S. DoS website for Short-Term Scholars.
  • This category is NOT subject to the 12- and 24-Month Bars on Repeat Participation, however, please check with the OISS if you have any questions.   
  • Program Duration: Three (3) weeks to one (1) year  
  • Primary Activity: Used for visitors who bring a specialized knowledge or skill set. Details are available on the U.S. Dos website on Specialists.  
  • This category is NOT subject to the 12- and 24-Month Bars on Repeat Participation, however, please check with the OISS if you have any questions.   

Prospective Visiting Research Scholars or Professors who have been invited to Teachers College and are in need of J-1 visa sponsorship should work with their academic host department to initiate the process of applying for their J-1 DS-2019.
