Research Center for Arts and Culture Profiles Dance in New Jersey
A survey released by Dance New Jersey at its annual meeting in New Brunswick Monday reveals dance groups in the state tend to work in isolation and continue to struggle financially.
Most of those responding derive only a portion of their income from their work in dance. Although they dedicate more than 30 hours a week to the art form, they reported a median dance-related income of $16,000 in 2004. Many have second jobs.
The survey, introduced by Dance New Jersey executive director Macada Brandl and intended as a first step in profiling New Jersey's dance community, was conducted by the Research Center for Arts and Culture at Teachers College, based at Columbia University in New York.This article, written by Robert Johnson, appeared in the July26th, 2006 publication of The Newark Star-Ledger.
