Panel to Discuss Marriage Equity at TC
The Constitution Day event on September 17 will feature New York Assemblymember member Daniel O'Donnell, New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Susan Sommer, Senior Counsel and Director of Constitutional Litigation at Lambda Legal, and Columbia University Professor Jeffrey Lax.
The event, sponsored by the Vice President’s Office for Diversity and Community Affairs, the Office of Government Relations and Queer TC, will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, in Milbank Chapel. The panelists will also address the disparity of rights when juxtaposed with those of heterosexual married couples.
O’Donnell has represents the 69th District in Manhattan since 2002. Quinn was elected to the New York City Council in 1999 and for the last three years has served as speaker. Sommer handles litigation and oversees the work of several attorneys in all areas of Lambda Legal’s work, including equal recognition of same-sex relationships and the rights of lesbian and gay parents. Lax is an assistant professor of political science at Columbia and recently published “Gay Rights in the States: Public Opinion and Policy Responsiveness” in the American Political Science Review.
Milbank Chapel is located on the first floor of Zankel Hall at Teachers College, 525 West 120th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam.
